Church Over The Water
Enviromental Design
Overview
With this work I wanted to experiment with lighting and the effect that would have on the environment. I created an environment inspired by the idea of ferrying to the underworld, a dock on the edge of a loch with symbolism of death on the other side, in this case a church with a graveyard and a threshold they are behind, the two stones creating this entrance.
I settled on four images that show off the contrast that factors such as time of day, fog and lighting can have on the feel of the scene.
Clear Day
This shot uses the least fog and full sunlight, and this gives the shot a fairly normal, everyday feeling, It is the most basic of all the scenes.

Foggy Day
This next shot feels more ethereal, with the light of the sun coming through the church and strong sunbeams catching the increased fog. This is intended to create an almost welcoming feeling to the scene. The scene as a whole uses lighting on the gateway stones and the church to ensure details are not lost, even when the lighting would lose them.

Foggy Night
Now into the night time shots, this is the most foggy of the scenes and creates a similarly mysterious scene to the last. Transitioning from day to night makes this scene feel instantly more ominous and I believe this scene feels almost liminal in presentation.

Clear Night
This is another night scene, but with a lack of fog there is much less mystery involved. In my opinion this is the most dangerous looking of all the scenes, with all on display but in the dark of night.
